When it comes to food, life was simpler in the past. Most (if not all, of it was made at home) and people ate what was on their plate without too much carping or caring. No one had to diet (even if you were seriously overweight) and you ate the same kinds of food day in and out (unless you stole your neighbour's or colleague's lunchbox).

Now, food comes at you everywhere, from websites that chronicle up-to-the-minute restaurant openings (and closing downs), to TV (food travel shows, reality cookoffs, straightforward recipe-based shows, etc) to newspaper and magazine articles on what's good, bad and downright ugly for you.

So, here's another blog on food, hopefully from a unique point of view - a completely simple one that will meander down virtual food halls, pausing to take on different viewpoints and showcase other ones. Lets' bite into this together!

(No) Table Service
Lately, I find that service (and the lack of it) has become quite a pressing problem at restaurants. And this begs the question: are restaurants allowed to charge you a compulsory service charge even when their service has failed to match up to standards?
Recently, my friends and I debated the point when eating lunch at an all-day dining place in central Mumbai where I had to 'kidnap' the menus (refusing to hand them back to the server because no waiter had come by to take our order). That's when one of my dining companions told us that at a recent meal in a restaurant (again in central Mumbai), she witnessed a woman pick up a glass and let it drop from arm level after not getting any service.

A resounding crash was followed by four waiters rushing up to her from all corners of the restaurant, at which point she coolly dictated her order to them. We all eyed the glasses on our table, decided we hadn't nerve enough, and went back to trying to catch the waiter's attention. Later, one of the owners came by to apologise, saying they were training their waiters, but as I said, it's not fair to charge people for service while your guys are on the learning curve.

Also, I couldn't help wondering later that maybe the solution is to stick to a self-service format (like Eat Around the Corner, located in Bandra, Mumbai) does.

The Eyes Have It
Admit it. After watching a season of Masterchef, we've all been guilty of garnishing our food just so, and wiping the rims of plates in order to make our dishes more visually appealing. But sometimes, it's time to push the boat out further.
