The house help who tossed one-year-old Rehan Khakre from the fourth floor of a Byculla building did not understand the repercussions of her actions, the police said. The girl, 13, was arrested on charges of attempted murder and was sent to the Dongri Children’s Home. “The girl
still does not understand that her actions have harmed someone. For her it was just like throwing water or pinching someone to settle her score,” said Sanjay Kadam, senior inspector, Nagpada police station.

The police said the girl, who is just 13 years old, was agitated and throwing Rehan from the terrace flat at Honda Mansion was a way of displaying her anger and frustration. She was upset after Rehan’s mother had scolded her for breaking a glass plate a few days ago.

“The girl is an orphan and had boarded a Mumbai-bound train from Bihar last month. With no means to feed herself, she started to beg in south Mumbai,” said Kadam.

Rehan’s father Akhil told the police that he brought the girl home around eight days ago so that he could educate her and also she would be Rehan’s playmate.

On Sunday morning, the girl was baby-sitting the child who refused to stop crying. Already upset over the scolding, she took the boy to the terrace of the building and threw him from there.

Rehan was rushed to the nearby Prince Aly Khan Hospital. He is in a stable condition, the police said.
