The Central Bureau of Investigation on Thursday approached the Gujarat High Court on Thursday against the lower court order refusing police custody of former junior home minister Amit Shah. The agency sought quashing of the special CBI court order and a five-day custody of Shah in the
Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case in which Shah was named among 15 accused.

Justice Akil Kureshi of the Gujarat HC issued notices to the respondents — Shah, lodged in Sabarmati Central Jail, and the state government.

A CBI team on Thursday grilled former Gujarat additional DGP O.P. Mathur for five hours. Mathur was head of the CID that probed the encounter of Sohrabuddin Sheikh and his wife till the Supreme Court handed over the case to CBI.

According to CBI officials, the probe was derailed during Mathur’s watch as the CID chief. “Mathur was brought in after (CID chief) G.C. Raigar refused to act on some illegal instructions of Shah,” a CBI official said.

He said Mathur would be called for questioning again, as there were allegations of fiddling with evidence during his stint.
