The International Cricket Council (ICC) president Sharad Pawar said that the apex body had no choice but to provisionally suspend the three Pakistani players accused of 'spot-fixing'.
Pawar said the seriousness of allegations against the Pakistani players prompted the ICC to take such a
drastic step.
The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief is in New York to open the North American chapter of his political party.
"Having to serve the notice was unfortunate, but the International Cricket Council had no choice."
He added that the ICC took the allegations "very seriously".
"The credibility of the ICC and the reputation of the game are at stake. ICC takes such instances very, very seriously. We will not tolerate any nonsense in cricket," he added.
He also dismissed claims made by Pakistani officials that there may have been a conspiracy to undermine the Pakistan cricket team.
"It is most unfortunate if anybody has said this," he said.
"Whenever there is some allegation or some suspicion, it becomes the responsibility of the ICC to make an in-depth enquiry," added Pawar.
Pawar said that the provisional suspension of the players was "not a final action". The "final decision" on the future of the tainted cricketers' careers would be taken by an independent commissioner.
