People in the Capital now have a creative reason to pay a visit to the Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station. Installations conceptualised and designed by artist Naresh Kapuria have now become a part of this station, thereby adding a new dimension to the place.

The installation has been put up at the VIP entrance of the station. “Titled, Journey, the artwork depicts the never-ending journey of trains. Trains go on and on, moving from one destination to another, passengers come and go. My installation is a tribute to the diligent and confident journey of a train,” says Kapuria.

Describing his art as interactive, Kapuria adds that the work will make people passing through the station see the deeper significance of their journeys. “This installation, which displays a moving train, several human faces, and, lantern lamps, will provide an interactive and welcoming atmosphere to the travellers,” says Kapuria.

The western concept of public installation art arrived on the Indian aesthetic mainstream in the 1990s, when progressive organisations like Sahmat, a Left wing cultural organisation and artists such as MF Husain, Subodh Gupta, Vivan Sundaram and Anjolie Ela Menon made art works for public spaces.




Kapuria feels its a good sign for Indian artists that the concept has gained popularity here, as it is indicative of the widening reach and understanding of art.

Kapuria’s installations have adorned a part of the New Delhi railway station since 2010 and have been widely appreciated by a large audience and the art fraternity.
