If aiming paper planes at your friends or even teachers is a favourite pastime during boring lectures, here’s your chance to show off your skills. Paper Wings, a unique competition in the city, judges participants on the skill, technique and innovation put into creating paper airplanes and flying them.

“The competition gives people a chance to exhibit their creativity and skill. This is a global event and it is the second time that we are organising it in India,” says Rohan Vyavaharkar, national communications manager, Red Bull India.

The competition will hold preliminary rounds in nine cities and seven qualifiers from each city will come together to compete at the finals in Delhi next month. The Mumbai qualifying round will be held today, from 2 to 5 pm at Our Lady of Perpetual Succor High School, Chembur.

According to Vyavaharkar, folding airplanes out of paper may not be as easy as it seems. “Competitors will be judged in three categories — height at which the plane reaches, the length it flies and the creativity displayed. These categories are
separate and one can choose to compete in either one or all three together,” he explains.

With the competition open to all, Vyavaharkar is optimistic about the turnout they will receive this year. “Our last event in 2009 received a lot of entries. This time, we are expecting an even bigger response from enthusiasts, as we have targeted more cities this year.”
