With the festive season in full swing, students have yet another occasion to look forward to. Olio 2013, a day-long thespian extravaganza, organised by St Andrew’s College is all set to showcase the best of dark humour and hard-hitting plays.
This edition will mark the 13th year of Olio and the theme this time is ‘A Royal Affair’, which promises some rich costumes and period dramas on stage. “Each college is supposed to write an original script based on royalty. They also have to select a country from the options provided and incorporate its characteristics in their play,” says Desiree Gonsalves, professor in charge, Olio.
The best four plays, each of around 25 minutes, were narrowed down from over a dozen colleges, after an elimination round held last month.
“This year, we expect the performances to raise the bar in terms of variety and experimentation. The audience will get to enjoy black comedy, musicals and lyrical dialogues. One of the plays features a quirky feline character. Apart from the main plays, we have some hilarious filler acts too, which will spoof celebrities, besides parodies to keep the audience entertained,” adds Gonsalves.
The participating colleges this year are KC College, Wilson College, Andrew’s College and Pravin Gandhi College of Law. The countries they will represent are Russia, England, Portugal and Egypt. “I have been a part of Olio for four years now. Nothing beats the experience of working with new people and creating something different for the stage,” says Unaiza Merchant, play head, St Andrew’s College.
The competition will be judged by actor Genelia Deshmukh and RJ Erica. Previous years have seen well-known personalities like Raell Padamsee, Dolly Thakore, Perizaad Zorabian and Cyrus Broacha judge the event.
Olio will be held on September 6, from 10.30 am to 4 pm, at St Andrew’s Auditorium, Bandra (W). Contact 98194 60262 for more information.
