The works of the late celebrated cartoonist Mario Miranda are set to go on display in the city next month. Organised by the Mario Gallery, the nearly month-long exhibition titled Mario’s World is being curated by Gerard da Cunha. It will be held at Aks Art Gallery, Andheri. Apart from popular works, the exhibition will also have a special section based on cartoons commissioned in Europe.
“There is no special reason to have this exhibition. His death anniversary is on December 11, but that’s not why we are showcasing his cartoons. We just like his work so much that we want more people to see it,” says Shabana Chawla of Aks Art Gallery, adding, “We have a special section based on the works he was commissioned to do in other countries. Some of them have never been showcased before, especially his works from Europe.” But to ensure that the average visitor connects to ‘Mario’s World’, his popular works based on Bandra, Mumbai and Goa, to name a few, will also be on display. Chawla says, “However, we are unaware of the exact number of works to be showcased. Gerard is very particular. He has a layout of the gallery and will decide what he wants to put up where and how. All the placements will depend on the layout.”
And as a treat to Mario fans, a section of his original pocket cartoons will also be on sale. “The price will be on request. So people can now own an original cartoon by Mario,” says Chawla.
