Vikram Bhatt's thriller 1920: Evil Returns, starring Aftab Shivdasani opposite Tia Bajpai, has earned Rs. 12.27 crore over the weekend.
"Collected approx Rs. 12.27 cr nett in its opening weekend. Fri 4.05 cr, Sat 3.88 cr, Sun *est* 4.34 cr," reports trade expert Taran Adarsh.
"1920: Evil Returns has recorded an exceptional total in its opening weekend. The business was robust on Friday, dipped marginally on Saturday, but went upwards on Sunday. Its performance in the mass circuits was simply fantastic, while the multiplexes of urban centres also performed well," the trade analyst added.
The film, which was reportedly made on a budget of Rs. 9 crore, has already recovered its cost.
The horror flick revolves around Jaidev Varma (Aftab), a famous poet, who lives as a loner as he is unable to meet the love of his life. He stays with his sister Karuna (Vidya Malvade), who is his support system until he meets Smruti (Tia), whom he finds near the lake under mysterious circumstances. Jaidev brings her home against the wishes of his sister, who senses something wrong with Smruti. Soon, Jaidev finds out that Smruti doesn't remember anything from her past life.
The film marks Bhushan Patel's debut as a director. He has also been signed by Ekta Kapoor to direct the second installment of Ragini MMS 2 which has Sunny Leone in the lead role.
