For over two years now, the film adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s famous novel 2 States has been a mass of confusion. Although the latest buzz suggests that Imran Khan will play the lead, producer Sajid Nadiadwala says it isn’t true. “Nothing is finalised right now except for the

director, a new guy called Abhishek Varman,” says Nadiadwala. “He is writing the script, which will be wrapped in a few months. Then we’ll decide the cast, etc. We are going to make an announcement around July 10.”
The film adaptation has been in the news since 2010 when Bachna Ae Haseeno director Siddharth Anand was apparently finalised, with Saif Ali Khan and Priyanka Chopra as the leads. Then Deepika Padukone was said to have replaced Priyanka.
Later, Shah Rukh Khan was said to have entered the fray with a new director, Vishal Bhardwaj, and Asin was set to star opposite SRK. In between, South star Ileana D’Cruz was supposed to be SRK’s new heroine. At that point, SRK announced that he was “confused” since it seemed as though a lot of people wanted to do the film, so he let the movie go.
That led to a further round of rumours — that Ranbir Kapoor was to play the lead in SRK’s place. It was also suggested that Imtiaz Ali, fresh from the success of Rockstar (2011), would direct Ranbir again in the film. But then the grapevine insisted that Ranbir was out and Imran was in, and that Deepika, Asin and Priyanka are back in the running for the female lead. Just to add to the confusion, there were also rumours that I Hate Luv Storys (2010) director Punit Malhotra would direct it and would probably also rope in his ‘lady love’ Sonam Kapoor.
Now that Nadiadwala has clarified that nothing has been finalised except for Varman, who worked as an assistant director on My Name Is Khan (2010) and Student Of The Year, watch this space to learn how long will it take to solve the 2 States puzzle.
