Veteran actor Sarika garnered a lot of popularity for her appearance in the remixed version of the famous qawwali, Dama dam mast qalandar in Bejoy Nambiar’s recent release, David. And now, interestingly, her daughter Shruti Haasan will also be seen in a reworked adaptation of the musical piece in her upcoming film, D-Day, directed by Nikhil Advani.

The new version has been sung by Mika, with music composer trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy recreating the qawwali. “The idea to use the song came about for two
reasons — one, the film’s setting fits the melody perfectly. And secondly, Nikhil is Sindhi by birth, and he has literally grown up listening to this song, so it was always on his mind,” says Nikhil’s sister and co-producer, Monisha Advani.

Nikhil calls it serendipity that the mother and now, the daughter will both feature in films that have renditions of the famous qawwali. “It was appreciated in David, so we are looking forward to the response of the rendition in our film as well,” he says.

Will Shruti also be seen in a special song-and-dance sequence like her mother was shown in David?

“D-Day has been mounted in such a way that there won’t be any lip-synced songs in it. But Shruti will surely be part of the scene when the song plays during the narrative,” informs Monisha.

“Since David’s version has given a very classy and different perspective to the qawwali, we are confident that people will appreciate our song too. We have only used four stanzas from the original version,” says Monisha, who reveals that the song will be go public in a few months. “Since it’s already a hit among fans, we plan to break it long before the film’s marketing starts. So sometime around May, we will come out with it,” she adds.
