Actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan rubbed shoulders with Hollywood star Michael Douglas at the UN headquarters in New York, where she was invited to commemorate the International Peace Day on Friday morning. The United Nations announced her as its goodwill ambassador at the event held at Rose Garden.

Dressed in a cream lehenga and black top, Ash was introduced as a ‘world famous actress from India’. She ended her address to the gathering with a Sanskrit shloka and explained the meaning in English. “May all become fortunate, may all experience peace, may all achieve fulfilment, may all be blessed. God bless us all,” she said. Apart from UN chief Ban Ki-moon, the ceremony was attended by UN Messengers of Peace Douglas, British anthropologist Jane Goodall, Jewish-American writer and Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel and American actor and singer Monique Coleman.

“It is an absolute honour to be here. I am glad I have been able to participate because it truly is an honour and I am looking forward to the whole experience,” Ash said after the ceremony. “Peace is the call of the day, has been and will always be,” she added. The 38-year-old was later seen talking to Douglas and posed for photographs with children, who were part of a performance group that played the violin during the ceremony.
