The ongoing casting for Sanjay Gupta’s next directorial venture, Shootout At Wadala, has been making headlines for a while now. A few days ago, a report suggested that Asin was in talks with the makers for a role in the multi-starrer, but citing date issues, she turned down the offer.

AsinTired of the constant speculation, Director Gupta and Producer Ekta Kapoor are now miffed. “Asin was never approached. I think either she or her manager is delusional. She was never in the running for my film. We need a powerhouse performer for the film. So once it was clear that Vidya Balan couldn’t do the film, our only choice was Kangana Ranaut, and not Asin,” says an infuriated Gupta, adding, “I wonder who spoke to her about the film, because I can assure you that neither Ekta nor I have done so. Kuch discuss bhi nahi kiya hamne uske saath (we have not discussed anything with her).”

For the uninitiated, Gupta went out of his way to rope in Vidya for the female lead role, but once things didn’t work out with her, the makers approached Kangana. “I had written the role for Vidya, Asin can never fit into the part. All of it (the news) came from out of the blue. Ekta was also very upset about it. Even when we were speaking to Vidya, we had Kangana in mind as the backup,” he says.

Shootout At Wadala will apparently dramatise the Mumbai Police’s first-ever registered encounter, where gangster Manya Surve was shot dead. While John Abraham will play Surve, Anil Kapoor is set to portray encounter specialist Issaque Bhagwan. The film is likely to go on the floors on March 1.

Interestingly, Gupta, who initially wanted to cast Vivek Oberoi as Dawood Ibrahim in his film, was later forced to drop him due to the actor’s “unprofessional behaviour.” The Kaante (2002) maker is yet to cast a new actor for the part.
