2012 was the year of high-grossers and 2013 looks just as promising. The Khan triumvirate, Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn and Hrithik Roshan along with Ranbir Kapoor, Farhan Akhtar and others are coming to woo audience in a theatre near youin 2013.

Here are the contenders that aim to fill Bollywood’s coffers in 2013:

Besharam
Star cast

Ranbir Kapoor, Pallavi Sharda

What’s the big deal?
Ranbir teams up with Dabangg director Abhinav Kashyap. Also, it will be the Kapoor scion’s first release after his successful outing in India’s official entry to the Oscars, Barfi! His pairing with Pallavi, who has been spotted in Love Breakups Zindagi, is also interesting. Long before its release, Besharam has been making news for its out-of-the-box (or out-of-the-boot) poster. Interestingly, immediately after Besharm, Ranbir will shoot with Abhinav’s older brother Anurag for Bombay Velvet.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag
Star cast
Farhan Akhtar, Sonam Kapoor

The big deal
The film is an official biopic on the legendary Indian athlete Milkha Singh. The Flying Sikh has been personally involved with Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s project right from the start. As for Farhan, whether it was losing weight, growing a beard and his hair, or training hard to achieve a runner’s body, the filmmaker-actor has left no stone unturned. Interestingly, the film’s title has been sourced from Milkha’s father’s last words to him during the pre-Partition massacre. It’s also believed that the runner sold the rights to his story for just R1 to the makers. The film will also trace Milkha’s love affair before his marriage.

USP
Rang De Basanti director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra returns after Delhi 6.
Farhan Akhtar’s first outing after earning critical acclaim for Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.

Buzz quotient: 6/10

Dhoom:3
Star cast
Aamir Khan, Katrina Kaif, Abhishek Bachchan

What’s the big deal?
The big franchise stars Aamir as the antagonist in its third part. He is believed to have trained in ballet, acrobatics and the French technique of Parkour, while Katrina, who also has major action sequences, has apparently undergone paragliding training. Abhishek (who has lost nine kilos for the part) and Uday Chopra reprise their roles, while Jackie Shroff is another new addition to the cast of the film, directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya of Tashan fame.

USP
Aamir Khan’s negative role.
Katrina Kaif teaming up with Aamir.

Buzz quotient: 9/10

Gunday
Star cast
Arjun Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, Priyanka Chopra

What’s the big deal?
Ali Abbas Zafar (director of Mere Brother Ki Dulhan) brings together youngsters Arjun and Ranveer. The film will see the actors play black-marketing mafia men. The casting came about after reports of the two fighting over Anushka Sharma became public (of course, all three of them have dismissed such reports). For the female lead, Katrina Kaif’s name did the rounds, before Priyanka was finally roped in.

USP
Two young actors — Ranveer and Arjun — playing hardcore mafia men.
Priyanka Chopra joining the star cast.

Phata Poster Nikala Hero
Star cast
Shahid Kapoor, Ileana D’Cruz

What’s the big deal?
Rajkumar Santoshi returns after the success of his 2009 hit, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (APKGK). The film will see Shahid work with Santoshi for the first time. It’s also the second Bollywood outing for Ileana, who made her debut in Barfi!. Apparently, the film is in the same genre as APKGK in which Santoshi mixed romance with masala. From the start, the venture has been in the news because of its title, inspired by the famous dialogue mouthed by Naseeruddin Shah in Hero Hiralal.

USP
Rajkumar Santoshi’s film after a gap of four years.
Shahid and Ileana teaming up.

Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai 2
Star cast
Akshay Kumar, Sonakshi Sinha, Imran Khan

What’s the big deal?
In this sequel to the 2010 hit, Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai (OUATIM), Akshay replaces Ajay Devgn in the lead. It will also be interesting to see Imran as an intense character. Sonakshi Sinha’s role is reportedly inspired by Dawood Ibrahim’s one-time girlfriend, the starlet Mandakini. Although the filmmakers refute it, there is talk that the storyline is inspired by the rivalry between gangsters Dawood and Chota Rajan. Director Milan Luthria claims that the film isn’t all blood-and-gore. Instead, it will have heavy dollops of romance and drama.

USP
Akshay Kumar in a gangster avatar.
Milan Luthria’s next after the hit, The Dirty Picture.

Buzz quotient: 7/10

Chennai Express
Star cast

Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone

What’s the big deal?
Shah Rukh teams up with hit machine Rohit Shetty. He will also be seen with his Om Shanti Om co-star, Deepika, after six years. SRK will do action-comedy for the first time in a film that traverses the journey of a man who travels from Mumbai to Malleswaram. What makes the film interesting is that Rohit, who has always worked with Ajay Devgn (who doesn’t share a great equation with SRK), teams up with King Khan for the first time.

USP
SRK-Rohit Shetty teaming up.
King Khan and Deepika Padukone coming together again.

Buzz quotient: 9/10

Himmatwala
Star cast
Ajay Devgn, Tamannah Bhatia, Mahesh Manjrekar

What’s the big deal?
After directing some hardcore comedies (Heyy Babyy, Housefull and Housefull 2), Sajid Khan ventures into the heavy-duty action zone in his fourth outing. Although the film is widely known as the remake of the 1983 Jeetendra-Sridevi cult hit of the same name, Sajid claims he has a new storyline that’s only ‘inspired’ by the
original. Ajay will be seen doing some bone-breaking stunts after the super success of Singham last year. The film will also mark the entry of southern superstar Tamannah in Bollywood.

USP
Sajid Khan’s brand of action comedy with Ajay Devgn’s brawny avatar. The modern version of a cult classic.

Buzz quotient: 6/10

Rambo Rajkumar
Star cast
Shahid Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha

What’s the big deal?
This will be Prabhudheva’s next action biggie, after the runaway success of Rowdy Rathore. It will mark Shahid’s entry into the masala action club. Sonakshi is the heroine. Reports suggest that initially, Katrina Kaif and Deepika Padukone were also in the running. The film was also in the news owing to its previous unofficial title, Namak.

USP
Shahid Kapoor turns masala action-hero.
Sonakshi Sinha-Shahid Kapoor pairing.

Radhe/Sher Khan
Star cast
Salman Khan

What’s the big deal?
Whether it’s Radhe or Sher Khan that hits theatres first, it will be Salman’s first project after his back-to-back blockbusters, the most recent being Dabangg 2. Both films will see him team up with brother Sohail Khan after past outings like Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya, Auzaar and Hello Brother. Although neither film has been
officially announced, one of them will most likely hit theatres during Salman’s most auspicious period, Eid. Interestingly, the films are also creating a buzz about the choice of female actor opposite Salman.

USP
Salman Khan. Period.

Buzz quotient: 9/10

Krrish 3
Star cast
Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra, Vivek Oberoi

What’s the big deal?
It will be Hrithik’s third outing as India’s favourite superhero. Also, he will be seen in a film after a gap of more than a year (according to Hrithik, this film needs all his concentration). Vivek, interestingly, is going to be seen as an out-and-out villain for the first time. The film, which will release in 3D format, is set to be 2013’s big Diwali release. While Priyanka makes a comeback to the franchise, Kangna Ranaut has joined the gang this time.

USP
Hrithik’s return.
3D format.
Vivek’s negative avatar.

Buzz quotient: 8/10

Boss
Star cast
Akshay Kumar, Mithun Chakraborty

What’s the big deal?
Akshay returns to the masala-action genre after the success of Rowdy Rathore last year, with this remake of the Malayalam blockbuster, Pokkiri Raja. He plays Mammotty’s part in the film, which also stars Aditi Rao Hydari and Shiv Pandit. Boss will also mark the directorial return of Anthony D’Souza, who directed Akshay in the box office dud, Blue. The makers are yet to cast a female lead since the script apparently doesn’t require one.

USP
Akshay’s masala action avatar.
No female lead.

Buzz quotient: 6/10

Ram Leela (working title)
Star cast
Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone

What’s the big deal?
The film casts an unusual lead pair — Ranveer and Deepika — for the first time. Last year, reports claimed that Kareena Kapoor was to play the lead role, but she dropped out due to her wedding and a pregnancy clause. Then Priyanka Chopra’s name did the rounds for some time.

USP
Sanjay Leela Bhansali returns to his forte — romantic drama.
Unusual pairing of Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh.

Shootout At Wadala
Star cast

John Abraham, Anil Kapoor, Kangna Ranaut, Sonu Sood

What’s the big deal?
A prequel to the 2007 hit Shootout At Lokhandwala, Sanjay Gupta’s latest venture dramatises the first-ever recorded encounter (by the Mumbai Police) of gangster Manya Surve. Since the film is based on crime journalist Hussain Zaidi’s book Dongri To Dubai, it’s going to boast of authentic detailing.

The Sanjay Gupta-Ekta Kapoor association.
John Abraham to be seen in an intense role.
