When you heard Aate Jaate from Maine Pyar Kiya, in the background you couldn’t help but hear Stevie Wonder crooning I Just Called To Say I Love You. That was 1989 but is the story any different in 2013?
Vikramaditya Motwane's Lootera is the latest context for which Bollywood music industry is back in the witness box. The jury is still out though.
The poetic track Shikayatein, falling well in place with the picturesque cinematography, falls face front in terms of originality (or so it has been said). The song echoes a track composed by Rachel Portman for the 2011 Anne Hathaway starrer, One Day.
Motwane told Indian Express in an interview: “Amit is too sincere to plagiarise. He came up with the theme without knowing about the film and as opposed to Portman's four notes, our theme has five. But the controversy affected Amit so much he went into a shell for nearly three weeks. He also wrote to Rachel with recordings of how the song was composed, clarifying his position.”
Anurag Kashyap told TOI: “It's an unnecessary controversy. I can promise you that neither me, Vikram or Amit were even aware of this film, One Day before the controversy blew up."
Fingers have been pointed at some other creative heads too.
Yaariyaan from Cocktail, composed by Pritam became quite a rage. Rang a bell though – it sounded like Coldplay's In My Place.
Jiye Kyun (Dum Maaro Dum) composed by Pritam is very similar to a Coldplay’s Fix You.
The item song Munni Badnam from Dabangg (2010) which is still quite the party rocker has been taken from a Pakistani song called Larka Badnam from the movie Mr. Charlie. The music has been composed by Lalit Pandit.
Pehli Nazar, Race - Remember the romantic song by Pritam in Race (2008)? The whole music is a copy of a Korean song which came out in public soon after the song was released. A really low moment!
Life in a Metro (2007) has some really good songs but unfortunately most of them are copied. Pritam with a special thing going with a certain region got some more love for Baatein Kuch Ankahee Si from Korea.
The melodious song Pal Pal from Lage Raho Munnabhai (2006) is an inspiration from Cliff Richard’s Theme for a Dream.
Kya Mujhe Pyaar Hai , the mushy song from the Shiney Ahuja and Kangana Ranaut starrer Woh Lamhe (2006) is extremely similar to an Indonesian song Tak Bisakah by the Korean band Peterpan.
