The first half of the year has come to an end, and three films have crossed the Rs. 100 crore mark. With their success, some new faces have made it to the elite list of stars whose films have crossed the coveted figure.

Joining Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn and the Khans — Shah Rukh, Salman and Aamir — are Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor, whose Aashiqui 2 was a surprise hit. Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone had their first brush with the club in Race 2. The actress cemented her position with Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, which was also co-star Ranbir Kapoor’s second successive Rs. 100 cr earner after Barfi! (2012).

Delayed success
On what seems like a late entry to the club for Saif, trade analyst Amod Mehra says, “Saif is here to stay. He started as a hero and then became a supporting actor. He  returned to the star league with Love Aaj Kal (2009). His popularity has increased and now, he’s become careful with his choices."

Mehra adds that people want to see more of Saif now than ever before. However, he feels that though his co-star, John Abraham, may have had two Rs. 100 crore films — Housefull II (2012) and Race 2 — he still needs to be part of an ensemble cast to ensure big collections.

Talking about the latest entrants, film exhibitor and distributor Akshaye Rathi says, “It’s really crucial that the box-office potential of every actor is tapped to the optimum, because the industry is facing a huge talent crunch. Barring eight to nine stars, nobody has been able to cross the Rs. 100 crore figure."

He also feels that increased revenues will improve the quality of filmmaking, which in turn will further raise the benchmark of the film business.

Here to stay
Rathi and Mehra both feel that from the younger lot, Deepika and Ranbir will stay popular in the long run. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh adds to that, saying, “They’re at the top of their game at this point. Deepika has evolved with every film. Ranbir, on the other hand, is far ahead at this point, and has shown good work consistently. They’re both here to stay."

Post its near-Rs 100 crore run in cinemas, the analysts feel that Aashiqui 2 stars Aditya and Shraddha also have the potential to rake in big money.
