It is not novel for actors in Bollywood to be pitted against each other as sibling or as lovers. It is, perhaps, their way to gauge their own potential or outdo themselves as they grow as performers. Here is an overview of some nuanced pairs

Deepika Padukone & Arjun Rampal
Deepika Padukone played Arjun Rampal’s love interest in her debut film, the 2007 hit Om Shanti Om (top). Three years hence in 2010, she was seen playing Rampal’s younger sister in Sajid Khan’s multi-starrer film, Housefull (above). The film was a success at the box office.

Meena Kumari & Dharmendra
Rumoured to be real life lovers too, Meena Kumari and Dharmendra did seven films together of which in the 1965 film, Kaajal, they acted as brother-sister. In all the other films including Phool Aur Patthar (1966), Chandan Ka Palna (1967) and Baharon Ki Manzil (1968) they were seen as a couple in love.

Priyanka Chopra & Ranveer Singh
Ranveer Singh, who’ll soon be seen romancing Priyanka Chopra in Ali Abbas Zafar’s forthcoming release, Gunday has reportedly been roped in to play her brother in filmmaker Zoya Akhtar’s next film. Now, in which of the two roles do they look more convincing is yet to be seen.

Aishwarya Rai & Shah Rukh Khan
Ash and SRK may have charmed the audience with their sizzling chemistry in Aditya Chopra’s 2000 hit Mohabbatein and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s romantic classic Devdas (2002) but the pair had come together for the first time on screen playing twins in Mansoor Khan’s 2000 film Josh.

Juhi Chawla & Sanjay Suri
Juhi Chawla and Sanjay Suri were first seen together as a couple in Sujoy Ghosh’s 2003 musical drama Jhankar Beats. Two years later, Juhi played Sanjay’s elder sister in filmmaker Onir’s critically-acclaimed film, My Brother…Nikhil, and they got rave reviews for a touching portrayal of sibling love.

Dev Anand & Zeenat Aman
Dev Anand played a doting brother in search of his lost sister, Zeenat Aman in their first film together — the 1971 hit Hare Rama Hare Krishna. Eventually the two did six more films together, all of them as a couple including the 1973 hit Heera Panna, where Zeenat even sported a bikini in a scene with Dev Anand.
