The Indian version of the Razzies — The Ghanta Awards — are going to face stiff competition from some of the city’s top stand-up comedians this month.
Called The Royal Turds, the newest anti-award show in town will chronicle the best of the worst of Bollywood in a two hour long
event at the Liberty Theatre on February 15.
The brainchild of comics Tanmay Bhat and Gursimran Khamba will feature acts by well-known comics Rohan Joshi, Ashish Shakya and Anuvab Pal too.
Incidentally, the Ghanta Awards will also be held on the same day at JW Marriott.
“We’ll go through each category with sketches, jokes on Bollywood movies and trends. There will also be some audio-visual content; for instance, the show will start with a
censor certificate and a credit sequence,” says Bhat, who along with Khamba set up one of India’s first comedy podcast called All India Back**d (AIB) about a year ago.
It has now turned into a live property with The Royal Turds. Tickets for this show can be purchased at the venue too.
While the initiators have picked the nominated films, it is the fans and consumers of Bollywood who have voted for the winners. Ask Bhat who he is expecting to turn up at the show, and he says, “We (stand-up comics) have a bunch of people from Bollywood following us on Twitter, so I’m expecting a few.
Gul Panag and Ranveer Shorey will be there. Ayushmann Khurrana may also come.”
While films like Heroine, Joker, Cocktail, Kya Super Kool Hain Hum and Bhoot Returns are nominated in the Worst Film category, Salman Khan for Ek Tha Tiger, Dabangg 2, Sanjay Dutt for Department and Abhishek Bachchan for Bol achchan will compete for the Worst Male Actor
Tickets can be bought at Liberty Theatre or at www.theroyalturds.com. The R250 passes have been sold out. However, the R400 and R600 are available.
The first 20 people who arrive at Liberty Theatre with proof that they bought tickets to the Fly Music Festival editions that got cancelled recently will get free entry to The Royal Turds event.
