Alam Ara
Starring Prithviraj Kapoor, Alam Aara was the first Indian talkie, made in 1931, by director Ardeshir Irani. The movie is a cult classic. Such was its hype that police aid had to be summoned at the time to control the crowd.

Achhut Kanya
Among the early superhits in the Bombay film industry, this 1936 film deals with the social position of Dalit girls and is considered a reformist period-piece. It stars acting pioneers such as Ashok Kumar and Devika Rani.

Duniya Na Mane
This 1937 Hindi classic was directed by V Shantaram and had Shanta Apte in the lead role. It is hailed for its daring attack on the ill-treatment of women in Indian society and depiction of child marriage.

Kismet
Considered as one of the biggest hits in the history of early Hindi cinema, this 1943 film had Ashok Kumar in the lead. The movie was the first to show an anti-hero character, a double role and an unmarried girl getting pregnant.

Tansen
Starring legendary singer-actor KL Saigal in the lead, this 1943 film was the second highest grossing Indian film of that year and introduced audiences to the story of Mughal emperor Akbar’s blessed musician Tansen’s love story.
