Farhan Akhtar's Don 2- The King Is Back, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra in the lead roles, has earned Rs. 48.39 crore in its opening weekend.
"Don 2 collects Rs. 48.39 cr nett in its opng wknd [Hindi + Tamil + Telugu]. Breakup: Fri 15.3 cr, Sat 15.09 cr, Sun 18 cr [early estimates]. Business fell marginally on Saturday, but picked up on Sunday because of the Christmas holiday," film critic Taran Adarsh tweeted.
It earned Rs. 15.3 crore on the opening day, which is the highest first day collection on a non-holiday Friday.
"While the film has fared exceptionally well at multiplexes, the business at single screens and B & C centres is way below the mark. The public response is in extremes, which explains the huge difference in the business of multiplexes and single screens," Adarsh added.
The film is a sequel to Farhan Akhtar's 2006 Don, which was a remake of the 1978 Amitabh Bachchan starrer of the same name.
In overseas markets, Don 2 broke the record for the highest single day gross for a Hindi film in Australia with estimated earnings of USD 82,000 on Friday. The earlier record was Reliance Entertainment's Bodyguard at USD 74,000.
Don 2 released with 3,000 movie prints in the domestic market and a 3D release on another 550 screens.
