Thrashed by critics and marred by controversies, Indra Kumar's Grand Masti has amassed approx Rs. 55 crore so far. The Riteish Deshmukh, Vivek Oberoi and Aftab Shivdasani-starrer has also fared well at the overseas box office.
Grand Masti has come under the scanner of high court for allegedly containing vulgar and obscene content besides scenes that degrade women. Here's a look at the movie stills.
"#GrandMasti Wknd 40.18 cr, Mon 7.75 cr, Tue 7.25 cr [few sites
yet to be added]. Total: 55.18 cr nett. MASSIVE HIT," tweeted trade analyst Taran Adarsh.
The film that opened with approx Rs. 12.5 cr on day one went on to add Rs. 13.5 cr on day two, taking the two day total to Rs. 26 cr.
Though the movie does not boast of big names, it's doing well abroad nevertheless. "Grand Masti has fared very well in U.K. and U.S.A.-Canada. The opening weekend total stands at $ 5,25,000 ( Rs. 3.32 crores)," according to Bollywood Hungama.
“It was a real surprise to see a film like GM, with its cast, do such great business. It goes without saying that vulgarity brought in viewers. It only proves that there are a lot of people who watch such cinema. Distributors definitely made good money and it’s a hit,” trade analyst Amod Mehra told Dibojyoti Baksi, Hindustan Times.
The film's success defies the critics' verdict that thrashed Grand Masti left, right and center.
Before its release, a stay was put by a single-judge court in Punjab and Haryana, over allegations of vulgar dialogues and obscene content, besides scenes that degrade women. However, later the Punjab and Haryana high court gave the nod for its release as per its schedule.
The movie starring Vivek Oberoi, Riteish Deshmukh and Aftab Shivdasani is a sequel to Masti, which was released in 2004.
