It sure has been a good week for the entertainment industry, despite the sombre weekend in Mumbai. Jab Tak Hai Jaan (JTHJ) and Son Of Sardaar (SOS), both opened on November 13 and irrespective of having been mid-week releases around Diwali, have done very well nationally at the box-office.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh says, “Both JTHJ and SOS saw fantastic openings and a great run at the box-office. The figures have been superb.” Even though the weekend meant collections of only half a day on Saturday, the films, says Ashish Saxena, COO, Big Cinemas, “will make up for the loss in the coming weeks.” He adds, “Though they lost around Rs. 2-3 cr on Sunday, they have no competition until the end of the month.”

Trade analyst Vikas Mohan says, “Both the movies picked up really well. But then because of the demise of Balasaheb Thackeray, they had no shows over the weekend (Saturday evening onwards), which led to a massive drop in numbers from Mumbai. The real test for the films will begin this week.” Vikas points out that one of the things that could work against these films is their higher–than-usual ticket price.

Trade analyst Vinod Marani has similar thoughts. He says, “They had a decent opening but picked up very well from Wednesday, but suddenly things changed over the weekend, at least in the city.”

However, both films have performed exceptionally well. Film exhibitor and distributor, Akshaye Rathi says, “JTHJ and SOS have made it a happy Diwali for the industry and viewers. While JTHJ is a perfect for the classes, SOS has all the right elements to cater to the masses.”
