Ajay Bahl of BA Pass fame has said that Karan Johar or Kiran Rao did not associate with The Lunchbox or The Ship of Theseus for the love of the art of cinema. They took the step as a business strategy, the director added.
Ajay Bahl was speaking at a panel discussion titled 'Hindi cinema in 21st century: ek kadam aage, ek kadam peeche', on the first day of Cine Bahastalab 2013. Directors Subhash Kapur, Anand L Rai and film journalist Ajay Brahmatmaj were also part of the panel.
Ajay added, "People like Karan and Kiran are seeing for a fact that there is an emerging market for content-driven films like (The) Lunchbox or (Ship of) Theseus and they do not want to lose out on the new market space."
The director further said, "We should be happy for the fact that these films do not bore us in the name of art. They are entertaining as well as issue-based. This is a wonderful blend."
Later, speaking to Hindustantimes.com, Ajay Bahl said that he is set to make his next film, a thriller with Mahesh Bhatt. Bahl elaborated, "I will begin shooting for the film next month." Further elaborating on the subject of the film, the director said, "It is a thriller that explores the journey of a farmer family that migrates to Mumbai and the problems it faces in the city."
When asked about an actress he would love to work with, Bahl said, "I approached Richa Chadda for BA Pass before asking Shilpa Shukla but Richa did not have the time as she was shooting for Gangs of Wasseypur at the time. Other than her, Konkona Sen Sharma is one actress I would love to work with."
Talking about his personal life, Bahl said, "I am a rich brat - one who drinks and drives. I have had several girlfriends." When asked about the one he is currently dating, the director said, "Yes, I am dating someone but I will not tell you who she is. She is not from the industry." After a little coaxing, Ajay said that she lives in Delhi and added jokingly that he is happy for the fact that it is a long-distance relationship.
