Filmmaker Abhishek Kapoor visited the HT House on Wednesday along with the cast of his upcoming film, Kai Po Che, including actors Sushant Singh Rajput, Amit Sadh, Raj Kumar and Amrita Puri, along with Manish Hari Prasad, creative director of Studios Disney UTV.

Abhishek Kapoor can heave a sigh of relief. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has granted the director permission to use footage from a historic India-Australia match from 2001 in his upcoming film, Kai Po Che (KPC).

The game, played at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens, saw India win by 171 runs after being forced to follow-on. VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid put in memorable performances, while Harbhajan Singh took a hat trick and even Sachin Tendulkar bagged wickets on the final day.

For KPC, Abhishek had wanted permission to use the footage of some celebratory moments from the match. He had even shot some dummy scenes lest he wasn’t allowed to use the original footage, but thankfully, they won’t be needed now.

The director confirms, “We’ve got the rights to the famous match. It was a historic win for the Indian team, and I’m very thankful to the BCCI.”

Cricket plays an integral part in the film, which is set in Gujarat in the same time period (2001-02). “We could not have used the general footage as everyone in India remembers that match ball-by-ball,” says Manish Hariprasad, creative director- studios, Disney UTV, which has produced the film. The film is set to hit theatres on February 22.
