Irrfan Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui-starrer The Lunchbox is making decent collections at the box office, defying the notion that films with little masala fail to shine at the box office.
This Ritesh Batra's début directorial venture collected Rs. 1.25 crore on the opening day. The film is being shown at more than 400 screens. The movie on Saturday earned Rs. 2.6 crore, thanks to a good word of mouth.
The Lunchbox is the story of two lonely people finding companionship and comfort in each other, without ever meeting, via letters. It wonderfully encompasses the pathos and loneliness of a neglected housewife and those of a widower on the verge of retirement.
Filmmakers in the industry are happy with the BO report of The Lunchbox. Speaking at a panel discussion on content versus collection in cinema at Cine Bahastalab 2013, director Anubhav Sinha said on Friday, "Why are we worried that Grand Masti has collected over Rs. 50 crore in a week? Should we not welcome the fact that the audience is also accepting films like The Lunchbox? With a limited screening, the movie has collected Rs. 1.25 crore on day one."
Directors Subhash Kapoor, Anand L Rai and Ajay Bahl too agreed with Sinha and expressed happiness that considering the budget and screening limitations, The Lunchbox has fared well at the box office.
