A decade after Sanjay Gupta’s 2002 hit, Kaante, the filmmaker is all set to get a sequel rolling. A couple of days back, Sanjay Gupta tweeted that after completing Shootout At Wadala (SAW), his next will be Khotte Sikke. Now, it turns out that Khotte Sikke is the working title for Kaante 2.
“Sanjay was always keen to take the Kaante franchise forward. So he and his team started work on the script for Khotte Sikke. It’s basically the part two of his 2002 film.
He hasn’t announced the title as Kaante 2 because the original is stuck in a legal tussle with co-producers Pritish Nandy Communications,” says an insider. Gupta, however, hopes to eventually release the film as Kaante 2. The original was also allegedly a rip-off of Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs (1992).
“Just like Kaante, the new film will have six protagonists. It will also have an important part for a heroine. The casting will boast of an A-list actors,” adds the insider. The original had Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt and Mahesh Manjrekar, among others.
A couple of days back, Gupta tweeted: “In A Dog Eat Dog World... Meet The Wolves. — Khotte Sikke (sic)”; “Milap Zhaveri, Tushar Hiranandani, Samir Hafiz, Sanjay Bhatia and me have come together to write a riveting noir heist thriller (sic).”
“Right now, Sanjay wants to focus on SAW. But he has ambitious plans for Khotte Sikke. The film will be shot almost completely overseas with an all-foreign crew,” adds the insider. When contacted, Gupta said, “It’s too early to talk about that film.”
Interestingly, there were 2010 media reports of the film being stalled after Gupta’s fallout with Sanjay Dutt (who was then supposed to produce the film). There is also a 1973 film called Khote Sikkay, starring Feroz Khan and Danny Denzongpa.
