Clearly, the first eight months of 2013 witnessed a surge in romantic films as filmmakers tried their hand at numerous love stories (including Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Aashiqui 2, Raanjhanaa and Chennai Express among others). However, it’s interesting to note that the last quarter of the year

will witness big stars in fast-paced action films.
While Akshay Kumar will be seen in the desi-action flick Boss, Sunny Deol will return in his much-loved avatar in Anil Sharma’s Singh Saab The Great. What’s more, the director already seems confident about his next offering. “Since people love Sunny doing action, any director would be happy to have him in such a film. Also, I feel that action served with the right emotions can never go wrong,” says Sharma.
What’s worth noting is that it’s not just well-established action stars who are acting in these films, but also other unusual names who will be dabbling with the genre. Chocolate boys Saif Ali Khan and Shahid Kapoor will be seen getting macho onscreen for their respective films — Bullett Raja and Rambo Rajkumar. Rahul Mittra, producer of Bullet Raja opines, “Unlike other films, you will see very realistic action in this movie. And as for action films, I seriously feel it might be a case of herd mentality. Eventually, like any other genre, this will also pass when the audiences get bored.”
So if there’s ‘desi-action’ and ‘realistic-action’, who’s to say there cannot be ‘stylised-action’ with hit franchises like Hrithik Roshan-starrer Krrish 3 and Dhoom:3, with Aamir Khan in the lead. “Action has always been an integral part of Indian films. With every generation, the format changes. But I have always believed that action without emotional connect looks weak,” says Anthony D’souza, producer of Boss. “My film is raw, real and gritty action which is laced with humour in huge doses,” he adds.
That’s not all. The Zanjeer remake with Ram Charan Teja in the lead and Naseeruddin Shah-Randeep Hooda starrer John Day are also going to be action capers. “The big success of south remakes has only inspired more filmmakers to make action flicks. Such movies also find great patronage in smaller centres,” says trade analyst Taran Adarsh.
