In a first, Bollywood will see as many as 30 releases in the months of September and October, with around Rs. 350 crore riding on the films. Trade pundits say that this is unprecedented for the film industry, and it’ll be all about survival of the fittest.

The lineup includes Bipasha Basu’s Raaz 3 (Rs 37cr), Ranbir Kapoor-Priyanka Chopra starrer Barfi! (Rs 50cr), Kareena Kapoor’s Heroine (Rs 18cr), Akshay Kumar’s OMG Oh My God (Rs 35cr), Sridevi’s English Vinglish (Rs 15cr), Rani Mukerji’s Aiyya (Rs 9cr) and Arjun Rampal-Abhay Deol starrer Chakravyuh (Rs 20cr), among others.

“We only have 52 Fridays and some get affected by IPL and exams. Hence, filmmakers don’t have many options. Films which will be able to create buzz will survive over others. It is all about being seen and heard,” says trade expert Atul Mohan. Film critic Rajeev Masand says, “There is lot of variety, which makes the season ahead exciting. Having said that, in the end, it is all about survival of the fittest.”

Some of the small budget releases are Priyadarshan’s Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal, Mallika Sherawat-Vivek Oberoi starrer Kismet Love Paisa Dilli, Chittagong with Majoj Bajpayee and Arshad Warsi’s Jolly L.L.B.

Some say so much action in such a short span is not a good idea. “So many movies fighting for attention at the same time will adversely affect business,” says trade analyst Taran Adarsh. “Only films with star power  will be able to beat the clutter. Hopefully, this irrationality will settle sdown soon,” says Vikram Malhotra, Viacom 18.

Same season, other years-
Until now, the highest September-October release score was that of 2009, when 23 films opened together.

Here’s the two-month report card through the years:
2011: 19 films
2010: 19 films
2009: 23 films
2008: 22 films
2007: 21 films

Trade analysts attribute the rush to a hurry to release films before year-end.
