That Malayalam filmmakers Shaji Kailas and A K Sajan have cashed in on the recent spot-fixing scandal and announced a film on tainted cricketer Sreesanth’s life has not gone down well with Bollywood. Experts in the Hindi film industry have slammed this announcement as just another publicity gimmick, and say it’s no good to make a film on the matter.
“It’s rubbish. A film on this incident should never be made ... and I don’t think such a film will ever work at the box office. Films like Jannat (2008) were based on match-fixing but that was fictitious and audiences were curious. Had it been on a real-life incident, it wouldn’t have worked,” says filmmaker Ramesh Taurani.
Filmmaker Sunil Bohra, who made Not A Love Story (2011), which was based on the murder of Neeraj Grover in 2008 that led to the arrest of Emile Jerome and Maria Susairaj, says, “The film would have worked wonders as the content was good but it did not, as the verdict of the case came around the same time. When the reality is high-drama, who would pay to see a film on it? People announce such films just for publicity.” Filmmaker Mukesh Bhatt, who made Jannat, feels it’s the issue and not a person that the story should be based on. “Let’s not put Sreesanth in the dock yet ... he has only been accused. I’m not saying that one should not make a film on the subject, but one should make sure no one’s image is tarnished.”
Some trade experts, however, feel that such a film may just be a good bet. “If this film is entertaining and its content is good, it may just work well!” says trade analyst Taran Adarsh.
A similar announcement was made after the Delhi rape incident too. Such a step lacks dignity. Cinema does get inspired from real life incidents, but we should give it some space.
Let’s not put Sreesanth in the dock yet ... he has only been accused till now.
