Filmmaker Subhash Ghai’s last directorial venture starring actor Salman Khan, Yuvvraaj, in 2008, was a box office failure. But that hasn’t stopped the two from working together. Come 2014, Ghai will be directing him again in another project. Currently, he is back in the director’s chair after

five years with the musical-drama Kaanchi. Known for promoting new talent, he is launching 21-year-old Bengali girl Misthi (inset) opposite Kartik Tiwari, who has done films like Pyaar Ka Punchnama and Akaash Vani.
After Yuvvraaj, you are doing another film with Salman Khan next year.
I share a beautiful relation with Salman, which is beyond a director and an actor. He is like my family and respects me a lot. He is busy with previous commitments this year. We want to start our movie only when my script is complete. It’s a big responsibility for me to direct a superstar like him. I hope we make a wonderful film.
Will you work with SRK again?
If I get a perfect script to cast him, why not. He is also a superstar and demands many responsibilities from a director.
Is the poor box office run of Yuvvraaj behind your five-year hiatus from films?
We all have hits and flops and that’s a part of the business. It has nothing to do with your next picture. I wrote three scripts in this period and now I am directing Kaanchi.
Tell us more about Kaanchi. You are launching a new girl Mishti.
Kaanchi is an entertaining musical drama. It’s about an encounter of a small-town girl from mountains (played by Mishti) and her lover (played by Kartik) with two powerful men of the country. It’s a film on women empowerment. After meeting 500 girls and auditioning 340 girls, I shortlisted Mishti.
You said in an interview that she is an actress of Kajol’s caliber. That’s a big statement to make.
There is nothing big about it. Kajol showed high caliber and came out with a new image of heroine. Mishti doesn’t have inhibitions and pretensions as an actor. She is as free as Kajol was in her initial days.
What do you have to say about the Kartik-Mishti pairing?
They look like a perfect pair and have great chemistry. Both are wonderful actors and trust me a lot.
It’s a big budget film (R35 crore). Are you aiming for the R100 crore club?
I do not live in the dream or intoxication of the R100 crore club. That is silly. Kaanchi may do more business, you never know.
