Mahi Gill, who has so far only been seen playing rural belle roles, is set for a glamorous makeover with her upcoming film, Utt Patang. Directed by debutant director Srikanth Velagaleti, Gill will play Sanjana, a cosmopolitan girl and a con woman all in one in the film, which also features Saurabh Shukla, Vinay Pathak and Mona Singh.
Excited about her new avatar, Gill informs, “The film’s a comic thriller. The plot unfolds over one night and all the characters get entangled with each other over heist money. It’s a mad whodunit comedy.” She adds, “My character is a Dagdi chawl ki ladki who is very loud and attractive. She abuses and smokes throughout the film and wears low-cut dresses. She doesn’t care about love and is ready to change her boyfriend for a richer man.”
Best known for her serious roles in Dev D and Gulal, Gill says she learnt about comic timing and having fun on the sets from her co-stars. About Vinay Pathak, she says, “He plays a double role in the film. Ram and Lucky are both very aggressive but they are also very different from each other. It was fun watching him slip from a simple man with big dreams (as Ram) to a gangster running behind money (Lucky), who is obsessed with French accents and cuisine.”
When asked if she was disappointed with a guest appearance kind of role in Abhinav Kashyap’s Dabangg, Gill says, “The film was about Salman Khan, so my role wasn’t going to be very big any ways.” After voicing her disappointment on how it turned out, Salman apparently promised to do another film with her in the near future.
Apart from Utt Patang, Gill will also be seen in Paan Singh Tomar with Irrfan Khan. She is working with Naseeruddin Shah in Michael, with Jimmy Sheirgill in Sahib, Biwi Aur Gangster and with Vinay Shukla in Pappu Ki Love Story this year.
