Travelling in this city isn’t easy with never-ending traffic jams and roads that are perennially under construction. Add a transport strike to the mix, and you have a commuting disaster waiting to happen. However, thanks to technology, it need not be all gloom and despair, with websites and social networking platforms coming to your aid today.

Leading the pack is Khaliseat.in, which was launched on Republic Day this year. “We don’t just encourage carpooling; we also support autorickshaw and cab sharing. People register using their Facebook accounts and we just ask those commuting together to split the cost between them as mutually decided,” says Shilpa Mohta, spokesperson of Khaliseat.in. The company founded by Dhruv Shah that has 250 registered users, also asks users to tweet details of their trip using the hashtag ‘khaliseat’.

Two other new services that could also be useful today as autos go off the roads are Zinghopper.in and Sharedcab .com. While the former concentrates on instaride (hitch a ride in less than an hour), the latter is more about cab sharing. “On Zinghopper.in, you ask for companions if you are leaving for some place in the next hour. So it is a real- time service,” says Vivek Karnik, a marketing executive, who uses the service regularly. On the other hand, Sharedcab.com offers pick-ups in a chauffeur-driven AC car where you split the costs with fellow companions.

And commuters have more to look forward to. Smart mumbaikar.com plans on launching an instaride service soon. “Mumbaikars don’t want to wait or pre-plan their journey. We were given feedback to work on instant sharing of autos, taxis, cars and bikes and our concept is in development. It should be up and running in a month,” says Raxit Sheth, founder, Smartmumbaikar.com.
