Day 1 of Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week was all about a clash of colours and cuts.
Designer: Neeru Kumar
Known for: Textile work
Collection: The debut show by the designer was good enough to hold the whole week. An excellent showing of well-made creations in jackets of varied lengths (short ones teamed up with saris), umbrella skirts with asymmetric hems, varied textures and fascinating weaves, definitely made it one of the best on the runway.
Known for: Colours and fringes
Collection: Rehane’s collection though a riot of colours with cutesy short dresses and shorts, left many wondering if it was for winter or spring summer season. On the showcase, were dresses with cloth turbans and fringed handbags that were reminiscent of the perfect tropical island vacation. Maybe that’s what Rehane was imagining her girl to experience this winter. The shorts scored on wearability with funk quotient.
Designer: Kallol Datta
Known for: Pleat dresses
Collection: Silhouettes were flowy and comfortable and the creations with geometric prints in white and black, stood out through his showing. Another standout new print was the aeroplane print he did on slick knee length shift dress. Waistcoats, parallel pants and winter jackets were high on creativity.
Known for: Prints and embroidery
Collection: The collection was unmistakably Indian in look and feel. There were dhoti pants paired with halter style cholis with tribal embellishments. Colours too, kept up the spirit of the show, as one saw bright blues, yellows and reds. An emphasis on fusion was seen as ethnic drapes were teamed with tops.
Designers: Pankaj and Nidhi
Known for: Structured fits
Collection: Famous for their beautifully made creations, this designer couple’s introduction of mat-woven creations in modern silhouettes and the use of sashiko, a Japanese form of reinforcement decorative running stitching, were something new to watch on the fashion runway. The neon pink and green detailing on leather-sleeved dresses was what got maximum applause.
Designer: Arjun Saluja
Known for: Masculine touch
Collection: There is always a touch of masculinity in designer Arjun Saluja’s creations — the structures, the heavy piping that ran through his collection,
et al this time, also made his creations exude masculinity. Impeccable tailoring and heavy dozes of creativity always make his creations some of the highly-praised ones during the week. Anti-fit shift dresses and parallel pants got good response. He also used a mixture of fabrics like wool blends and satin on pleated dresses.
A season too late?
While colour blocking is the biggest fashion rage right now, seeing it in designer Urvashi Kaur’s show made some fashion editors murmur if she isn’t a season late to showcase it
I care for fashion
