Every girl wishes to stand out at a party, but not everyone gets it right. You peek into your wardrobe and look at all the blues, greens and pinks — but finally choose to settle for that safe little black dress. This New Year, go ahead and experiment. Ditch the black — go for a funky pink or an electric blue. Let these stylists guide you.
The right fit
Before you pick a dress, keep in mind your body frame. Stylist Karuna Laungani who works with Elle magazine, swears by the peplum waist, which has been a popular trend this year. “A metallic or embellished peplum blouse or a dress looks chic. For those a little more daring, wear a metallic or brocade trouser suit to stand apart,” she says. For those trying to hide flab gained over the holiday season, Laungani suggests a tasteful empire-line dress “or a shift dress, as its line cut does not hug the body and is a great way to hide flab.”
Don’t fear looking over-the-top with bright hues. Stylist Varsha Bhawnani, who works with high-street store Vinegar, says one must not shy away from colour. “Be confident, be original. Wear all sorts of unusual colour combinations that others would fear to try. It’s an interesting and different combination that appeals, not one that necessarily smacks you in the face,” she says.
Unless your man is wearing a coat with deep pockets, carry a simple sling bag or a clutch. “Add pop with neon colour or go neutral and classic,” says Bhawnani. “A jewelled necklace, a studded ring or oversized earrings will lend a glamourous touch to your ensemble,” adds Laungani.
Everyone loves high heels, and New Year is the perfect time to bring them out. “Wear sequined peep-toes or pop coloured pumps; your outfit is incomplete without high heels,” says Laungani. However, Bhawnani insists that your prime concern should be comfort. “If you are not a high-heel person and plan to dance all night long, opt for bling ballerinas or loafers to complete your look.”
