From humble beginnings to being a self-made business maverick, Bobbi Brown has come a long way. Her revolutionary concepts of makeup fit for all skin tones, pioneering yellow-tinted foundation and one-stroke perfect gel eyeliner have made her eponymous label, a favourite with the girl-next-door and celebs alike. We spoke to Brown herself, who told us about her concept of ‘pretty powerful’, the label’s Indian stint and her beauty inspirations.

When you started, did you think that your line would evolve into a global super brand?
I started my company over 20 years back with a simple philosophy: to empower women with the right makeup and knowledge to look and feel like themselves, only prettier and more confident. I’ve always believed in showing women what’s right about them instead of what’s wrong. Whether she goes out without a stitch of makeup on or with a full face, a woman’s real beauty is reflected in how she feels about herself.

India finally gets a chance to be a part of the brand. How did you zero in with the decision of starting shop in this country, and Delhi to start with?
My goal is to develop products that meet the needs of woman of all ethnicities and cultures, so I’m always excited to be launching in a new market. I hope to reach a wider audience with the tips, tricks and skills that I’ve learned over the years. I am particularly thrilled to be launching in India — it’s such a beautiful country with a rich history. We are excited to open our first store in Delhi because it’s the home of a lot of women on-the-go who need easy-to-use products that can help them look and feel pretty and can effortlessly take them from day to night.

What is your ‘Pretty Powerful’ concept all about?
This campaign celebrates the beauty of real women from a variety of backgrounds through their inspiring stories, photos and videos. It symbolises my belief that all women possess natural beauty, and with the right tools, are empowered to a higher level of pretty. I’m hoping that images of real woman continue to inspire women to embrace their own inner confidence, so that they shine from within. I think women can gain a lot of confidence by seeing realistic, beautifully natural images celebrated in the media.

Are there any Hollywood actors or celebrities currently or in the past, who’ve influenced your work?
I admire many legendary beauties, including actor Ali MacGraw, fashion designer L 'Wren Scott, actors Freida Pinto, Meryl Streep and Audrey Hepburn, to name a few. All of these women have their own unique kind of beauty as well as an inner strength that reflects on the outside. We recently signed Katie Holmes as the brand’s first-ever celebrity face and I couldn’t be more thrilled. She is a great example of a strong, confident woman who knows who she is. Plus, she is beautiful without trying to be.

Do you plan to visit India any time soon? And have you visited us before?
I love to travel, so I would definitely love to visit India; the landscapes and colours look incredible. I know that I’d come back full of inspiration. I’ll keep you posted!

Would you want to work with any Indian celebrity, Bollywood star or Indian fashion designer?
One of the best parts of my job is that I get to work with women of all different backgrounds. I’m always meeting new people and learning so much from them. It would be an honour to work with an Indian or Bollywood celebrity. Indian woman are among the most beautiful in the world.

Brown’s Beauty Bytes...
The three essential products that Bobbi Brown feels, a girl must have in her makeup case, without fail are concealer, mascara and blush. “A little bit of under eye concealer works by lightening any under-eye darkness, instantly giving the eyes a lift. Mascara is the perfect way to lengthen and curl the lashes, giving the eyes a bright, wide-open look, and a pop of blush is a great way to give the skin a natural glow,” says Brown.
