Sheer styles are currently enjoying a prolonged moment of fashion glory as they promise the perfect marriage of sophistication with risqué fashion and taste with a touch of tease. They are not just summer staples but have successfully lasted through the monsoon, even looking to stay on in winter wardrobes.
“Sheer silhouettes emphasise a woman’s body, making for an utterly feminine look. Their charm lies in the illusion of demure skin show. But if not kept classic, the look can easily be mistaken for a trashy one,” says designer Shehla Khan.
Use our 10-step guide to ensure you that you follow the trend without any faux pas
Peek-a-boo panels are big this season, and a perfect fit for the sartorially shy. Opt for a sheer panel close to the hem of your skirt or dress.
Reverse the boring sheer top-and-blazer combination by throwing on a printed sheer jacket over a solid blouse.
Designer Shehla Khan favours sheer pants in darker tones with hints of lace. “Add to that attractive detailing and light-as-air transparency, and there is no going wrong,” she says.
Tops with well-placed sheer organza panels are a chic alternative to the already done-to-death basic sheer blouses.
Tap into two of the season’s biggest trends — layering and mixing textures — by throwing on a tulle skirt or complementing sheer overlay over printed leggings.
For sheer dresses, the trick is to choose one that has a solid bodice and modest lining to balance its see-through portions.
A sheer skirt with full-length lining is no fun, but do ensure that it’s modest and not a tell-all one at least. Team it with heels or wedges to create the illusion of a taller frame.
Turn to sari or lehenga blouses with a completely sheer back accentuated by a trace of embroidery for a subtly sexy look. An embellished sheer yoke can also bring glamorous relief to your outfit.
An anarkali jacket with a transparent flare teamed with shararas or cigarette pants injects an eclectic twist to this traditional ensemble.
The key is to avoid going overboard. A head-to-toe sheer look is a not-so-stylish recipe for disaster. So team a sheer top with a solid bottom and vice-versa.
Designer Anita Dongre arms you with ace advice to avoid looking tacky when wearing sheer:
Pay attention to the inner wear teamed with sheer silhouettes. Camisoles, tanks and slips ought to be of the right shade and length.
Avoid sporting a visible bra under sheer tops.
When shopping, hold the outfit up to the light to check how sheer it actually is.
If your arms are a problem area, avoid tops with sheer sleeves.
Remember that printed or textured sheer outfits promise more coverage.
