The thought of dal makhani doused in goodness of butter with tandoori rotis, and a glass of lassi to wash it all down, can make any foodie drool. But there are only a few who will go beyond the city limits to dine at a dhaba for the real taste of the highway palate.

A group of youngsters in the city will go those extra miles. Starting from February 5, the group City Flock…The Highway Dhaba Walk will organise Dhaba Walks to highway dhabas on first Sunday of every month.

ChickenThe members of the walk will gather at INA Metro station, from where they will leave for the dhaba walk in a car pool.

“Dining at a dhaba gets you in touch with your roots as you eat the local food of different states and also get a panoramic view of the countryside,” says Piyush Acharya, a 23-year-old mechanical designer, who floated the idea of a Dhaba Walk on a social networking site last month.

“When more than 150 people expressed their desire to join the walk, I decided to go ahead with it,” he says.

Desi delights
“There are many food groups in the city, but most of them explore street food in the city. Most people crave for foods like aloo parantha with white butter served at Murthal, or the daal baati choorma en-route Jaipur,” says Acharya, who is organising the first walk at Jhilmil Dhaba on the GT Road towards Karnal, with his friends Subhashish Aich, Dipanshu Bansal and Ajay Sharma.

The group held a trial walk at Laxman Dhaba in Qutab Institutional Area last weekend, and encouraged by the response the group now plans to explore more dhabas on National Highways 1, 2 and 8.

Eat, jam and walk
All food and no play can make anyone dull. Hence, members can bring along a music instrument of their choice and jam while they feast at the dhaba. Post the jam session and feasting, there’ll be some exploration  of the surrounding areas.

Take a walk
To join the group, watch out for Dhaba Walks’ schedule on the group Intelligent-Freaks Events on facebook, and send a request to be a part of the walk. Each walk will have about 20-30 members, who will be chosen on first-com-first-serve basis.
