Steven Spielberg's company is planning a remake of Pulitzer Prize winner The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck for its 75th anniversary in 2014, reports Deadline.com.

Several studios and producers were interested, including Robert Redford, but Steven Spielberg untimately managed to acquire the rights for the movie adaptation".

Originally, Spielberg was thinking of directing the movie himself, but DreamWorks Studios is hoping to time the release with the book's anniversary -- it was published in 1939 -- and Spielberg would not be free during that time table. No other director has been announced yet.

The Grapes of Wrath tells the story of the Joads, a family of tenant farmers driven away from their land in Oklahoma during the Great Depression of 1929. They head to California in the hopes of finding work.

Considered a piece of classic American literature, the novel was first adapted for the big screen by John Ford in 1940; the film starred Henry Fonda and was awarded two Oscars.
