With a resume that includes films such as The Departed, Up in the Air, Orphan and The Source Code, Vera Farmiga is undoubtedly one of the most talented actors in Hollywood today.
Based on the true life story, The Conjuring tells the tale of how world renowned paranormal investigators Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) were called upon to help the Perrons (Ron Livingston and Lili Taylor), terrorised by a dark presence in a secluded farmhouse.
The Oscar-nominated actor diversified into directing in 2011 with the film, Higher Ground. She will now be seen in the horror film, The Conjuring, that releases in India tomorrow. We chat with the 39-year-old about the movie, her spooky experiences and more.
What was your reaction when you got the script?
When I got the script, I was challenged spiritually and I love projects that make you do that. Projects that make you consider whether to challenge the concept of God or the lack thereof and so, I think at the core also was this story about compassion and concern for others which the lead characters, Ed and Lorraine Warren, possessed.
Any paranormal experience while shooting?
I have three scratches on my thigh that happened while shooting the ‘Trinity’ scene (in the film). The same thing appeared on my computer screen after I had my first creative conversation about Lorraine’s dresses and styling. After sealing Lorraine’s look, I opened my computer and saw the same three scratches across my computer screen which ultimately faded!
Did the supernatural experiences freak you out or made you believe in the supernatural?
No, I don’t allow it to take that power over me. If I do feel fear, I have a way to push it away and you know, I have the confidence and the love of God and I have the utensils and the tools, so there is no room in my life for anything supernatural.
You made your directorial debut with Higher Ground. Are you planning to direct again?
I don’t know. I would love to. I have two toddlers. A 4-year-old and 2-year-old, and I have my hands full right now with dates. I’m doing The Judge right now with Robert Downey Jr. Also, I haven’t found a story yet. But when I do, I will.
