Bombay Jayashri, a Carnatic music vocalist, is the only Indian among the Oscar nominees announced Thursday, for lyrics for "Pi's lullaby" from the movie Life of Pi.
Ang Lee-helmed Life of Pi bagged 11 nominations on Thursday, just one less than Steven Spielberg-directed political biopic Lincoln.
Life of Pi, the survival story of an Indian boy lost in the ocean with a Bengal tiger, will fight closely with political dramas like Lincoln, Ben Affleck's Argo and Katheryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty.
The other films are David O Russell's comedy Silver Linings Playbook, Tom Hooper's Les Miserables, Michael Haneke's Amour, Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained and Benh Zeitlin's Beasts of the Southern Wild.
Taiwanese-American filmmaker Lee is in the race for the best director trophy with Spielberg, Russell, Haneke and Zeitlin.
Daniel Day-Lewis is leading in the Best Actor category for his widely-praised portrayal of Abraham Lincoln. The other contenders in the best actor category are Bradley Cooper for Silver Linings Playbook, Danzel Washington for Flight, Joaquin Phoenix for The Master and Hugh Jackman for Les Miserables.
Best leading actress nominations include Jessica Chastain for Zero Dark Thirty, Jennifer Lawrence for Silver Linings Playbook, Emmanuelle Riva for Amour, Quvenzhane Wallis for Beasts of the Southern Wild, and Naomi Watts for The Impossible.
