To celebrate the life and works of legendary poet and film lyricist, Kaifi Azmi, his daughter, actor Shabana Azmi and her husband and lyricist Javed Akhtar will pay tribute to the veteran through a theatrical performance —Kaifi Aur Main, on his 10th death anniversary.
The piece can be described as a collage of Kaifi’s works, aimed at felicitating and celebrating his life, as seen through the eyes of his wife and actor, Shaukat Kaifi. Produced by Fever Entertainment, the poetic recollections will use a distinctly female voice and will trace both — the personal aspect of Kaifi’s life, coupled with the politics of the time in which his works were written.
Written by Akhtar, the narrative of the play is based on Shaukat Kaifi’s book of memoirs — Yaad Ki Rehguzar, as well as on Kaifi’s interviews and writings. The entire piece is interspersed with renditions of Kaifi’s poems and songs by singer Jaswinder Singh, supported by a live orchestra. Kaifi Aur Main premiered in Mumbai in 2006, on the poet’s fourth death anniversary.
The critically acclaimed play has garnered good reviews and has received an overwhelming response from its audiences. In November and December 2006, 14 shows of this production were staged in cities across the world including New York, San Francisco and London. The performance has also been staged in Mumbai, Ludhiana, Bangalore and Jaipur.
Kaifi Aur Main will now be staged on May 12, at Siri Fort Auditorium in the Capital at 7 pm. Reservations can be made at bookmyshow.com.
