This time around, Mumbai music aficionados don’t have even the option of travelling to Pune to experience what most fans would term ‘the show of a lifetime’. After David Guetta this March, the latest international act to grace our stages, Norman Cook aka Fatboy Slim, will play live in Gurgaon tonight and in Bengaluru tomorrow.
Ask Norman what convinced him to bring his show to India, he says, “I’ve heard there is recently a revolution going on with electronic dance music and so I wanted to come and check it out, and bring the full show along!” According to the artiste, he was invited a few times in the past to play in the country. “But they all sounded a bit like nightclubs for expats and I didn’t feel a true Indian vibe about them,” he says. Probe him on his favourite gigs ever and he adds, “Brazil and Japan seem to have taken me to their hearts, which I am very happy about. Australia has a very good crowd as well.”
While the arrangements for his trip to India have been made with detailed hospitality and cuisine requisites, Fatboy Slim won’t really be spending much time in the country. Currently in a world tour, he’ll be heading straight to the US for more shows after these two. When asked to stay back for a while in India for spiritual exploration, he says, “Sadly, not on this trip. I’m straight out after the shows and on to America. To explore the spiritual side I would need a lot more time and my family with me.”
Norman’s advice to the upcoming electronic acts in the country is: “Have fun and don’t take it too seriously.” Dance music is a celebration of rhythm and not just an excuse to play with machines, he says.
