Keen on exploring the reggae scene in Delhi, French band Dub Inc get talking about their first gig in the city and more. Here’s what Grégory Zigo Mavridorakis, the drummer and Aurélien Komlan Zohou, one of the lead vocalists, have to say.
What do you think people remember most about your gigs?
We like to spread our great energy and positive vibes. The best place to listen to Dub Inc is live, and it’s really important for us to have a conversation with our audience and to let them see that we play with our hearts.
What do you think of the music scene in Delhi/India?
For most of us, it’s going be a real discovery. With the exception of musicians like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan or Shri (who we have toured with) we aren’t very familiar with the Indian scene. We’ve just begun listening to the Ska Vengers and the Reggae Rajahs, as we will be playing with them during this tour.
What has been the most inspiring song for the band?
We don’t have a particular song. But artists who address social issues, like Bob Marley, Public Enemy, Manu Chao and Tiken Jah Fakoly inspire us.
We have heard that you are aware of India’s growing reggae scene, and are keen to explore it on your tour. So, what have you planned?
We can’t wait to meet the Indian reggae bands! We hope that we will share music together, and bring back new influences as well as new sounds to France.
If you could play at any gig in the world, it would be...
We want to perform all around the world.
Can you tell us something about your ‘Do-It-Yourself ethic’?
We want to stay independent, far from big labels and companies, because that’s the only way to stay free. We want to be able to say, play, and work on our own terms and ideals. We don’t play music for profit like everyone in the music industry, we play music to spread our message of peace, liberty and rebellion.
What will the line-up be like?
We will play the songs off all of our albums, so our audience can see and hear what we’re all about.
