Especially conceived for the Bonjour India Festival, Ananta Opus 195 brings together two distinct musical cultures. The concerto has been written by Pierre Thilloy, and will be directed by Samuel Jean. As always, Khan is excited about this unique association.
“Every collaboration has a vision and a concept. It’s not about just playing alongside each other. More importantly, the music should seem like a bouquet of flowers. The universal concept of togetherness and unity send out a beautiful message throughout the world,” says the legendary artiste.
A prolific composer, Thilloy’s official catalogue comprises more than 180 compositions including symphonies, concertos, chamber music, symphonic poems and even scores for silent films.
“He is a brilliant young composer. He visualised a concerto for three sarods, something which wasn’t done earlier” says Khan.
Pierre on his part claims that the journey of producing the concerto was “extremely interesting”.
“If Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Amaan and Ayaan are from the oral tradition that is Indian music, I come from a written tradition equally rigorous. So I designed my concerto as an open work that can modulate the whim of the interpreter. They can follow the path I indicate or show me another,” says Thilloy.
