New York based music producer dimmSummer has given a boost to the steadily growing popularity of electronic music in India. His new compilation, Revolution Rising Vol. 1, is a 16-track album that offers the best of electro as well as drum and bass, dubstep and garage, with most tracks on an exotic slant.

For dimmSummer, the album is a culmination of an eight-year long journey he undertook in 2001, wherein he launched his radio station, Ethnotechno.com and met several artistes from across the world, who now feature on the album.

“Some of these guys are the founding fathers of the electronic scene in Asia, UK, USA and even India. I’ve taken the cream of the crop and put all their music into one compilation,” he says.

The album may have been two years in the making, but it is something dimmSummer planned much earlier. In 2001, when Indian electronic music was more underground, he was among many musicians who were trying hard to get their music out to the masses.

Indian Inspiration
There were many artistes pioneering the electronic music movement. “Artistes like Karsh Kale, Midival Punditz, State Of Bengal and OmZone were making the kind of music that I wanted to hear more of,”  he says, explaining his inspiration behind this compilation. “I always had India in mind because most of the artistes are Indian or of Indian origin. In this way, the music is coming back to the motherland,” he concludes.

And the fact that the soundtrack of Karthik Calling Karthik featured Midival Punditz and Karsh Kale, is great news according to the maestro. “A lot of the sounds associated with Bollywood have their origins in underground music. More exposure for these genres would mean more appreciation and a more diverse listening experience,” he says.

Future Plans
The producer, who is also a part-owner of High Chai records, has big plans for the next couple of years. His label is famous for its long-running Avaaz NYC parties that have mixed rock and electronic music with art culture. dimmSummer says that he’d now like to bring the Avaaz sound to Mumbai soon.
