This month, the city has witnessed a number of interesting performances in the Indian classical music scene. And taking things to another level is an upcoming concert that brings together popular Hindustani classical vocalists Begum Parveen Sultana and Ashwini Bhide Deshpande. The duo will perform at Chirantan, a recital that’s being held on May 31, where they will be seen collaborating with celebrated santoor player, Pandit Satish Vyas.

Organised by Madhyam Entertainment, the evening will begin with a performance by Deshpande, who is one of the most successful vocalists from the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana. “Since the show is in the evening, I’ll present Sandhi-Prakash (dawn and dusk) ragas. I also plan on exploring some of the lesser performed evening ragas like Gauri, Purvi, Purva, Maligaura and Triveni,” says Deshpande.

Her act will be followed by a santoor presentation by Pandit Vyas, the senior most disciple of the santoor maestro, Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma. He says, “Chirantan is going to be different from other concerts because it brings together two of the greatest female vocalists, from different gharanas. I’ll be presenting my santoor recital in between their performances. My selection will depend on what Ashwiniji will sing.”

The evening will conclude with a recital by Padmashree Sultana, from the Patiala Gharana.

“I’m glad that I’ll be sharing the stage with Pandit Vyas and Ashwiniji. I’ve performed with them before, but it’s always great to perform with gifted musicians like them,” says Sultana.

Chirantan will be held on May 31, at Nehru Centre, Worli, at 6.30 pm. Tickets for the concert are priced at R100 to R500 and are available at Rhythm house and Maharashtra Watch Company. Call 6662 5661 for more information.
