He would have turned 47, if he was with us. A group of well-wishers and friends of late musician Amit Saigal will be celebrating his birthday today by playing his favourite numbers. The line-up includes rock bands Parikrama, Them Clones and Orange Street.

“Well, it was Amit who inspired Parikrama to enter the studio and record their first original. He understood the power of originals, well before anyone could even think of it, and that’s why everyone remembers him as a visionary and with immense respect,” says Subir Mallik, the guitarist with the band. “So we will be playing all originals,” he says.

Saigal, who used to head a magazine on rock music, was a guitarist himself. “We have performed with him in 1992 at IIM Lucknow,” says Mallik. The other band to perform tonight is the one formed by him. Called the Orange Street, the band was formed in 1995 that underwent a lineup change later.

“Amit was a very close friend. The first album and its track Over and Under, due to which we shot to fame, was also his idea,” says Anirban Chakraborty, who now manages Saigal’s magazine and is a member of the band.

“We will be playing the songs that Amit knew and was a part of,” says Bann, as he is fondly referred to. “The half-an-hour set would mainly comprise of originals. We might play, In the name of god and Zephyretta, as these two were his favourite Them Clones tracks,” says Surojit Dev of Them Clones.

Contrary to those who think it’s a sad tribute, the gig is a fun-filled celebration of his birthday. “We just want to celebrate Amit's day in his way. There will be a bigger tribute planned for later and we are working on that,” says Bann.
