She has a bevy of hits to her credit and, in the 16 years of her career in Bollywood, emerged as one of the most distinguished voices in playback singing. Sunidhi Chauhan chats about her journey so far.

You’ve achieved a lot of success at a young age (she is 29 now), you’re among the top Bollywood singers. How difficult is it to keep yourself grounded?
Staying grounded requires effort. I haven’t forgotten where I come from. It has taken a lot of hard work, love and passion for music to reach where I am now. I feel that each new song I sing is the first one I’m attempting. I want to feel that all my life.

You will be appearing on an episode of MTV Unplugged. What can we expect?
It’s an amazing concept — to perform the acoustic versions of your songs, because it gives you the chance to reinterpret the numbers. I will sing ‘Yaariyan’ (Cocktail) and ‘Le chale’ (My Brother Nikhil, 2005) among others.

You have been nominated for the best playback singer in the Global Indian Music Award (GiMA). What do awards mean to you?
It’s good to be recognised. Awards are a boost to do better. Even if you just get nominated, you see how much people have liked your songs.

Do you expect to win every time?
Sometimes, I have expected (an award) but not received one.

When you get nominated, you expect (to win) each time, right?
But I’m not hungry for awards. When my songs become popular, it is as good as getting an award. I perform at a lot of concerts and it’s wonderful to watch fifty thousand to a lakh people dancing to my songs.

What are the new film projects you are working on?
I am very excited about Ek Thi Daayani, for which Vishal Bharadwaj is composing the music. Besides, I am recording every day. There are too many songs and I forget the names of films.

Enrique Iglesias is coming to India next month... Really?
Yes.

And your collaboration with him – Heartbeat – was a big hit. Any chances of you performing with him?
I just got the news of his visit from you. If he wants me to perform the song, they (his team) will get in touch with me.
