The presence of the late ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh is still felt through some of the greatest pieces of works he rendered. To celebrate his birthday, his wife and ghazal singer Chitra Singh, is organising a concert in the city, titled The Legend Lives On.

The evening will bring on stage popular names like Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Ghansham Vaswani and Jaswant Singh, and will also be a platform for three young artistes to showcase their talent to the audiences.

All the performers will sing ghazals sung by the late Jagjit Singh. Singers Aman Trika, Budhaditya Mukherjee and Shahzad Ali, who’ve recently garnered popularity through the musical reality show, Sur Kshetra, will be presenting their favourite ghazals by the late singer.

“I used to watch the show regularly and these three boys were very impressive. So I asked Gajendra Singh; the director of Sur Kshetra to get these boys to be part of the concert. All three of them will be singing some of Jagjitji’s popular ghazals,” says Singh.

The concert will also mark the launch of the Jagjit Singh Foundation. “It was my husband’s dream to do something for musicians, who are talented but do not have the resources to nourish and showcase their talent.

I just wish to accomplish his dream,” says Singh, who has taken inspiration from Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia’s foundation, Gurukul, to ideate this project. She adds, “Though the logistics have to be worked out, our dream is to make a school, where people can not only learn but also stay, if needed.”

The concert is on February 7, at the Manik Sabhagriha Auditorium, opp. Lilavati Hospital, Bandra (W) from 7.30 pm.
