She continued to keep her fans updated with tweets about her daily activities while on tour in Asia and lamented that she had to cancel the Indonesian leg of the tour.

Lady Gaga posted a video of a flash mob of Indonesian fans performing in EX Plaza Indonesia, Jakarta, and told them “This made me cry so hard. This happened in Indonesia yesterday. I love you so much. You are the best fans in the world.”

Twitter’s second most followed user Justin Bieber also used the microblog to vocally proclaim his love for his followers, tweeting “im in a place i never thought or dreamed i would be. im the luckiest guy on the planet. I owe it to you. #IlovemyBeliebers #THANKYOU.”

Justin Bieber and his fans celebrated the early release of his latest single, All Around The World featuring Ludacris, on iTunes.

Fellow singer Rihanna reached a milestone of 20 million followers and tweeted “I know I'm late but the Navi just got deeper!!!! #20milRihannaNavy Welcome to the fam.”

US President Barack Obama and the Twitter account for Google’s video sharing site @YouTube also saw large fan increases during the week: Obama reached 16 million fans and YouTube hit 13 million.

Despite rolling out a new, more restrictive user policy last week, China’s Twitter equivalent, Sina Weibo, saw many new follower milestones.

Taiwanese TV host Kevin Tsai and Chinese singer He Jiong both surpassed 17 million fans on the site while Chinese actor Chen Kun raced past 15 million followers. American-born singer Leehom Wang leapfrogged ahead of Chinese TV host and singer Xie Na, stealing her place as China’s fourth most popular microblogger on Sina.

Third party estimates put Twitter at more than 500 million registered users. Sina reported that it had more than 300 million registered users on Sina Weibo in February 2012.
